Diesel Technician

The Diesel Technician program at the Central Pennsylvania Institute is designed to teach students how to service, troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair diesel engine powered equipment used in the agriculture, commercial trucking, and heavy equipment industries. Students will also be provided with the opportunity to obtain their Class B commercial driver’s license (CDL) and PA State Inspection with Category 3 (Medium to Heavy Bus/Truck) component. Other certifications include S/P2, MACS 609 Mobile Refrigerant Certification, and OBDII Statewide Emissions Certification.

In the classroom, students develop skills in reading, written communication, computation, and critical thinking. Through in-depth lectures, class participation, and written assignment, students gain a basic understanding of diesel engine theory as well as the design, function, and the principles of operation of the diesel engine system. Technical topics, such as gear ratios, cubic inch displacement, electrical circuitry, alignment angles, and the U.S. standard and metric measuring systems, are just a small part of the curriculum of the Diesel Technician program at the Central Pennsylvania Institute of Science & Technology.

In the state-of-the-art training facility, students acquire valuable diesel-specific experience, learning hands-on, how to properly inspect, diagnose, and repair basic engines, transmissions, torque converters, power transmissions, brake systems, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, diesel fuel systems, and air conditioning systems.

Each student will strengthen their mechanical aptitude and develop important analytical, technical, and problem solving skills as they disassemble, inspect, diagnose, repair, and reassemble various diesel engines and their integrated component systems using sophisticated diagnostic equipment, circuit diagrams, technical manuals, hand tools, gauges, electronic multi-meters, and power tools.

Students will also learn the importance of teamwork and time management as they work independently and as a team to complete each and every task assigned to them by their instructors in a proficient and timely manner. Quality workmanship, professionalism, and shop safety will also be discussed and practiced throughout the Diesel Technician program at the Central Pennsylvania Institute of Science & Technology.
