Diesel Technology*  

The Diesel Technology program at Ranken Technical College is an instructional program designed to meet Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) and National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF) standards. The program was specially created to meet the increasing demand for heavy duty service technicians in the fast growing transportation industry.

Students receive a mixture of classroom lecture and hands-on training, from ASE Master Certified instructors, in a variety of diesel systems, including air brakes, engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, electronic systems, HVAC, steering and suspension, and drivetrains. Students also practice proper preventive maintenance and inspection techniques.

Working both independently and in groups, students develop the strong oral communication, leadership, and problem solving skills that are vital to succeed in today’s rapidly changing diesel industry.

The Diesel Technology Program Curriculum

The Diesel Technology program at Ranken Technical College is made up of the following career-specific classes:

  • Preventive Maintenance and Inspection
  • Engines
  • Electrical and Electronic Systems
  • Hydraulics
  • HVAC
  • Steering and Suspension
  • Brakes
  • Drivetrains

In order to graduate, students must complete every class and maintain at least a 2.0 GPA, the equivalent of a “C” grade.

Employment Outlook 

Students who successfully complete the Diesel Technology program at Ranken Technical College will have the knowledge and training needed to secure an entry-level job servicing and repairing the diesel engines and system components found in today’s commercial trucks, buses, and other heavy equipment. 

As the diesel industry continues to grow rapidly, job opportunities for qualified diesel mechanics is expected to increase 11% by the year 2020, as fast as average, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The mean annual wage for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists working in the United States in 2014 was $45,160, while the mean salary for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists employed in the state of Missouri was $42,200 yearly and $20.29 hourly, just 7% lower than the national average. Entry-level diesel mechanics can expect to be paid an annual salary of $28,130 and advance to $65,350 with more experience.

The Two-Year Associate of Applied Science Degree

Ranken Technical College offers a two-year Associate of Applied Science Degree in Diesel Technology. This program is Pell Grant eligible.
