Diesel Equipment Technology*  

The Diesel Equipment Technology program at Hinds Community College is based upon the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification for Medium and Heavy Truck Technician training programs.

Through classroom instruction and hands-on training, students will learn the fundamentals of equipment mechanics and develop their mechanical and problem solving skills as they inspect, troubleshoot, and repair diesel engines, brake systems, power trains, hydraulic systems, air conditioning and heating systems, diesel fuel systems, electrical systems, and diesel electronic systems. Students also learn welding and preventive maintenance for diesel equipment mechanics.

Using technical manuals, hand tools, computerized diagnostic machines, and specialized instruments, students will disassemble, diagnose, repair, and reassemble diesel engines and their system components.

The Diesel Equipment Technology Curriculum

The Diesel Equipment Technology program contains the following career-relevant classes:

  • Preventive Maintenance and Service
  • Power Trains and Diesel Fuel Systems
  • Hydraulics and Computerized Engine Control Systems
  • Advanced Brake Systems and Engine Rebuilding
  • Air Conditioning and Heating Systems
  • Engine Trouble Shooting and Tune-up
  • Suspension and Steering Systems
  • Welding and Auxiliary Systems
  • Fluid Power Trains and Transport Refrigeration
  • Special Projects and Supervised Work Experience

Students must also take various general education classes to meet the minimum 60 credit requirements of the Associate of Applied Science Degree program. All students must maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA in order to graduate.

From Graduation to Occupation 

Students who successfully complete the Diesel Equipment Technology program at Hinds Community College will be equipped with the skills, education, and training needed to gain employment in the heavy equipment repair industry. With local industry employers giving graduates of the Diesel Equipment Technology program at Hinds Community College top priority, graduates can expect to secure an entry-level position as a fleet preventative maintenance technician, truck dealer technician, truck engine dealer technician, or material handling equipment repair with a salary ranging from $9 to $14 hourly.

As the diesel industry continues to grow rapidly, job opportunities for qualified diesel mechanics is expected to increase 11% by the year 2020, as fast as average, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The mean annual wage for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists working in the United States in 2014 was $45,160, while the mean salary for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists employed in the state of Mississippi was $36,430 yearly and $17.51 hourly, 19% lower than the national average.

The Associate of Applied Science Degree, Technical Certificate, and Career Certificate

Hinds Community College offers a two-year Associate of Applied Science Degree in Diesel Equipment Technology. Hinds Community College also offers an 18-month Technical Certificate in Diesel Equipment Technology as well as a 12-month Career Certificate in Diesel Equipment Technology. All three programs are Pell Grant eligible.
