Diesel Power Technology  

The Diesel Power Technology program at Delgado Community College teaches each student how to properly and safely operate, repair, and maintain diesel and multi-fuel industrial engines and equipment. 

Students learn diesel and natural gas theory in the classroom while they gain technical knowledge and develop problem-solving skills in the laboratory. Students learn how to properly use technical manuals, computers, machinery, and hand tools to complete each career-specific task such as diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining diesel engines, diesel electrical systems, diesel electronic systems, diesel fuel systems, overhauling diesel engines. Each student will also learn how to perform important preventive maintenance procedures and inspections. 

The Diesel Power Technology Technical Studies Certificate

The Diesel Power Technology Technical Studies Certificate program consists of the following courses:

  • Computer & Internet Literacy 
  • Introduction to Tool/Shop Safety 
  • Introduction to Diesel 
  • Preventative Maintenance Inspection 
  • Diesel Engine Overhaul 
  • Fuel Systems 
  • Basic Diesel Electrical/ Electronic Systems 
  • Natural Gas Engine Theory

In order to graduate, students must complete each course and maintain at least a 2.0 GPA, the equivalent of a “C” grade.

Occupational Outlook

As the diesel industry continues to grow rapidly, job opportunities for qualified diesel mechanics is expected to increase 11% by the year 2020, as fast as average, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The mean annual wage for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists working in the United States in 2014 was $45,160, while the mean salary for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists employed in the state of Louisiana was $42,910 yearly and $20.63 hourly, just 5% lower than the national average.

Students who successfully finish the Diesel Power Technology program at Delgado Community College will be well on their way to securing and holding an entry-level position as a diesel mechanic in the diesel and natural gas vehicle service and repair industry.

The Technical Studies Certificate

Delgado Community College offers an 8-month Technical Studies Certificate in Diesel Power Technology. This program is Pell Grant eligible.
