Diesel Technology  

The Diesel Technology program at Owensboro Community & Technical College provides students with the knowledge and training necessary to succeed as a qualified diesel mechanic in today’s rapidly changing diesel technology industry. Plus, Owensboro Community & Technical College has proudly partnered with New Holland, allowing students in the Diesel Technology program to train on some of the most advanced agricultural and heavy construction equipment used in the industry

Specialized classroom instruction and job-simulated hands-on training allow each student to develop the academic, technical, and professional knowledge and skills required to properly inspect, troubleshoot, repair, and service semi tractor trailers, farm equipment, and construction equipment. Students learn about the various components that make up the diesel engine system, including diesel engines, fuel injection systems, steering and suspension, electrical systems, electronic systems, hydraulics, heavy duty drive train, transmissions, on-board computers, undercarriage, mobile air conditioning systems, heavy duty brakes, and proper preventive maintenance techniques.  today.

Using service manuals, wiring diagrams, laptops, and hand tools, students will learn valuable problem solving, communication, and leadership skills as they work independently and as a team, diagnosing, testing, and repairing the sophisticated electronic and mechanical systems found on today’s modern diesel engine systems.

The Diesel Technology A.A.S. Degree with Agricultural Technician Track

Job Opportunities for Diesel Mechanics

As the diesel industry continues to grow rapidly, job opportunities for qualified diesel mechanics is expected to increase 11% by the year 2020, as fast as average, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The mean annual wage for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists working in the United States in 2014 was $45,160, while the mean salary for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists employed in the state of Kentucky was $40,650 yearly and $19.54 hourly, just 10% lower than the national average (BLS 2017, [https://www.bls.gov/ooh/installation-maintenance-and-repair/diesel-service-technicians-and-mechanics.htm]).

The Associate in Applied Science Degree, Diesel Technology Diploma, and Undergraduate Certificate

Owensboro Community & Technical College offers three separate two-year Associate in Applied Science Degrees in Diesel Technology with an Agriculture Diesel Technician, Construction Equipment Technician, and Medium & Heavy Truck Technician concentration, respectively. Owensboro Community & Technical College also offers three separate Diesel Technology Diplomas with an emphasis in Agriculture Diesel Technician, Construction Equipment Technician, and Medium & Heavy Truck Technician, respectively. Finally, Owensboro Community & Technical College offers thirteen different Undergraduate Certificates with various specializations in Diesel Technology. The Associate in Applied Science Degree programs, the Diesel Technology Diploma programs, and the four 32-week Undergraduate Certificate programs are all Pell Grant eligible.
