Diesel Technology
The Diesel Technology program at North Iowa Area Community College provides training in the testing, repairing, and maintenance of heavy-duty farm equipment, over-the-road diesel trucks, and other heavy-duty diesel systems.
Students will experience a mix of classroom instruction and practical hands-on training in the subjects of automotive shop safety, automotive electrical systems, electronic concepts, automotive suspension and steering, automotive brake systems, manual drive train and axles, automotive heating and air conditioning, diesel engines, air systems and brakes, diesel engine electronics, power trains and suspension, and maintenance shop operations.
Students will be required to meet with an academic adviser prior to admittance into the Diesel Technology program so that the student’s career plans, background, transcripts, test scores, life experiences, and motivation level can be assessed and used to design the best educational experience for the student.

In order to graduate, students must complete every course and maintain at least a 2.0 GPA, the equivalent of a “C” grade.
Career Opportunities
As the diesel industry continues to grow rapidly, job opportunities for qualified diesel mechanics is expected to increase 11% by the year 2020, as fast as average, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The mean annual wage for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists working in the United States in 2014 was $45,160, while the mean salary for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists employed in the state of Iowa was $39,410 yearly and $18.95 hourly, just 13% lower than the national average.
Graduates of the Diesel Technology program at North Iowa Area Community College will be equipped with the education and training necessary to obtain an entry-level position as a diesel mechanic in various sectors of the diesel industry including construction companies, engine machine shops, agricultural machinery repair shops, heavy equipment shops, truck service stops, and consumer product dealerships.
The Two-Year Associate in Science Degree
North Iowa Area Community College offers a two-year Associate in Science Degree in Diesel Technology. This program is Pell Grant eligible. Certain students may qualify to receive the Kibbie Grant or the Iowa Grant to help supplement the cost of their education.
