Diesel Equipment Technology  

The Diesel Equipment Technology program at Coastal Pines Technical College is designed to prepare students for a successful career in the rapidly changing diesel equipment service and repair profession.

Specialized classroom instruction and skill-specific hands-on training will give each student the opportunity to gain the advanced diagnostic, troubleshooting, maintenance, and analytical skills that are absolutely essential to successfully service, maintain, and repair today’s modern diesel-powered equipment.

Classes cover career-specific topics such as basic diagnostic computers, diesel theory, diesel technology tools and safety, diesel engines, diesel electrical and electronic systems, diesel truck and heavy equipment HVAC systems, preventive maintenance, heavy equipment hydraulics, and off-road drivelines. 

The Diesel Equipment Technology Diploma Program

The Diesel Equipment Technology Diploma program is made up of the following core classes:

  • Introduction to Diesel Technology, Tools, and Safety
  • Diesel Electrical and Electronic Systems
  • Preventive Maintenance
  • Diesel Engines
  • Diesel Truck and Heavy Equipment HVAC Systems
  • Heavy Equipment Hydraulics
  • Off Road Drivelines

Students are also required to take Introduction to Computers, Interpersonal Relations and Professional Development, Fundamentals of English I, and Foundations of Mathematics in order to fulfill the 48 credit hour requirements of the Diploma program. In order to graduate, students must finish each course and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0, the equivalent of a “C” grade.

The Heavy Diesel Service Technician Certificate

The Heavy Diesel Service Technician Certificate program contains the following classes:

  • Introduction to Diesel Technology, Tools, and Safety
  • Diesel Electrical and Electronic Systems  
  • Diesel Engines
  • Heavy Equipment Hydraulics
  • Off Road Drivelines
  • Diesel Truck and Heavy Equipment HVAC Systems or
  • Diesel Equipment Technology Internship

Students are required to complete every class and maintain at least a 2.0 GPA, the equivalent of a “C” grade, in order to graduate.

The Diesel Engine Service Technician Certificate

The Diesel Engine Service Technician Certificate program consists of the following classes:

  • Introduction to Diesel Technology, Tools, and Safety
  • Diesel Electrical and Electronic Systems
  • Diesel Engines

Students must finish each course and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0, the equivalent of a “C” grade, in order to graduate.

The Diesel Electrical/Electronic Systems Technician Certificate

The Diesel Electrical/Electronic Systems Technician program contains the following courses:

  • Introduction to Diesel Technology, Tools, and Safety
  • Diesel Electrical and Electronic Systems 

In order to graduate, students must complete every course and maintain at least a 2.0 GPA, the equivalent of a “C” grade.

Admission Requirements for the Diesel Equipment Technology Program

All applicants who wish to be accepted into the Diesel Equipment Technology program must meet the following requirements:

  • Applicants must be at least 16 years of age and not currently attending high school.
  • Applicants must have completed high school or received their GED.
  • Applicants must achieve the minimum program admission scores in Reading (70), English (32), and Math (26).

What to Expect After Graduating

Graduates of the Diesel Equipment Technology program at Coastal Pines Technical College can expect to secure and hold an entry-level position as a diesel equipment technician.

As the diesel industry continues to grow rapidly, job opportunities for qualified diesel mechanics is expected to increase 11% by the year 2020, as fast as average, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The mean annual wage for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists working in the United States in 2014 was $45,160, while the mean salary for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists employed in the state of Georgia was $43,170 yearly and $20.75 hourly, just 4% lower than the national average.

Diesel Equipment Technology Diploma and Undergraduate Certificate

Coastal Pines Technical College offers a two-year Diesel Equipment Technology Diploma. Coastal Pines Technical College also offers a one-year Undergraduate Certificate in Diesel Equipment Technology as well as two Undergraduate Certificates in Diesel Equipment Technology with a Diesel Engine Service Technician specialization and an Electrical & Electronic Systems Technician specialization. Both the two-year Diesel Equipment Technology Diploma program and the one-year Undergraduate Certificate program are Pell Grant eligible. Certain students may be eligible to receive the HOPE Scholarship Award to help supplement the cost of their education.
