Diesel Technology  

The Diesel Technology program at Mid Florida Tech provides entry-level training for students who wish to succeed as a medium and heavy duty truck and bus technician. Students will learn not only traditional methods of diagnosing and repairing diesel equipment but, will also be trained in using up-to-date computer diagnostic systems that monitor, control, and maintain information related to the equipment.

Through career-specific classroom instruction and practical hands-on training, students will learn how to properly maintain and repair diesel engines, electrical systems, and basic hydraulic systems, how to overhaul diesel engines, perform proper preventive maintenance, and repair heavy truck and bus chassis.

The Diesel Technology Course Outline

The curriculum of the Diesel Technology program is made up of the following courses:

  • Diesel Engine Mechanic / Technician Helper (150 clock hours)
  • Diesel Electrical and Electronics Technician (300 clock hours)
  • Diesel Engine Preventative Maintenance Technician (150 clock hours)
  • Diesel Engine Technician (300 clock hours)
  • Diesel Brakes Technician (300 clock hours)
  • Diesel Heating and Air Conditioning Technician (150 clock hours)
  • Diesel Steering and Suspension Technician (150 clock hours)
  • Diesel Drivetrain Technician (150 clock hours)
  • Diesel Hydraulics Technician (150 clock hours)

In order to graduate, students must complete the clock hours designated for each course and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0, the equivalent of a “C” grade.

The ASE Certification Tests

Each student will take the T1, T2, T3, T4, T5, T6, T7, and T8 certification exams administered by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence in order to certify that they are qualified to work as diesel technicians in the diesel technology industry. The exams will test students in the following key areas:

  • T1 – Gasoline Engine Repair
  • T2 – Diesel Engine Repair
  • T3 – Drivetrain
  • T4 – Brakes
  • T5 – Suspension and Steering
  • T6 – Electrical/Electronic Systems
  • T7 – Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning Systems
  • T8 – Preventive Maintenance

The optional Master Medium/Heavy Truck Technician exam is also available for students who wish to become ASE master certified diesel technicians.

Graduates of the Diesel Technology Program

Graduates of the Diesel Technology program at Mid Florida Tech will be well-equipped and fully prepared to enter the diesel technology job market and secure an entry-level position as a qualified medium and heavy duty truck and bus technician. 

As the diesel industry continues to grow rapidly, job opportunities for qualified diesel mechanics is expected to increase 11% by the year 2020, as fast as average, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The mean annual wage for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists working in the United States in 2014 was $45,160, while the mean salary for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists employed in the state of Florida was $43,720 yearly and $21.02 hourly, just 3% lower than the national average.

The Associate of Applied Science Degree

Mid Florida Tech offers a 15-month Career Certificate in Diesel Technology with a Medium and Heavy Duty Truck and Bus Technician concentration. This program is Pell Grant eligible. Those graduates who wish to pursue an Industrial Management Associate’s Degree are eligible to be rewarded 27 articulated credits at Valencia College.
